It was 11am in Seattle, Washington and 2pm in the Library of the Ballard School in Wilton when Mrs Bruschini's First Grade entered to have a live video conference with Adora Svitak.
Adora, nine years old and a published author since age six, shared with the first graders ways to tackle the problem of how do you write a story.
In live, real time Adora could talk with the first graders and they could talk back to Adora (probably larger than life on the big screen in the Library).
Starting a picture of an avalanche and then the world "avalanche" Adora elicited ideas and situations from the children and then from her computer in Seattle wrote a story based on the suggestions of the children with the typed story appearing on the screen at Ballard.
It was give and take and the first graders were fascinated by someone who might have been their older sister. They probably also learned that you start by writing and that there are many sources for inspiration.
Fascinating program and under Librarian Kali Nagler just one of the different virtual field trips that students at Ballard undertake every week.
By the way, this was the third session Adora had that day with Ballard first graders. That would be tough for an adult presenter - but for a nine year old - just amazing.
That's Adora Svitak talking to the first graders at Ballard School. And through the magic of video conferencing the first graders can talk back to Adora.
Adora is making her presentation on how to write. Adora not only gives video presentations on this subject she has also written a book Flying Fingers on how to write.
That's a lot for a nine year old but Adora has been writing and getting published since she was six.
Take a visit to www.adorasvitak.com It even has Adora's bloc which she keeps faithfully. You can also purchase Flying Fingers from the site.
